Is what is happening to a Muslim woman who is subjected to defamation and the spread of rumors about her—that she is insane—by her neighbor, who informed the neighbors of this, an act of God’s wrath or a trial? Is her feeling of fear towards the neighbors natural? And why did Allah allow this to happen?
Be at ease, for what has befallen you is a trial for the expiation of sins and the raising of ranks. The cure for obsessive thoughts is to turn away from them. Use what was said about you as a driving force to overcome the illness. You are capable of overcoming this stage with determination and willpower. Continue with the treatment and pray to Allah. The reckoning of the one who wronged you is with Allah, and we advise you to forgive her, for whoever forgives, Allah will forgive him. Permissible retaliation is to aggress in proportion to the injustice suffered, but forgiveness and pardoning are preferable, for Allah Almighty said: "And whoever is patient and forgives, indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] firm resolve." Overlook matters and do not overthink them, and the best response to rumors is to prove the opposite of what was said, Allah willing.
