Is the person who forbade backbiting in public wrong, or is the person who backbit?

Mutual advice among Muslims, enjoining truth and patience, and forbidding evil are among the most emphasized matters in Sharia. This should be done with gentleness and wisdom, with the intention of defending the honor of the backbited person. If it is possible for the one who hears backbiting to gently interrupt the conversation and defend his brother's honor, then advise the backbiter privately, that would be more appropriate. Otherwise, one must denounce the evil and support the wronged. Times of gathering in the mosque should be utilized for studying knowledge and mutual advice, as the Lawgiver has encouraged this and warned against wasting time in idle talk and backbiting, which is among the major sins.
