Is the Hadith: "Three matters, whether done seriously or in jest, are considered serious: divorce, marriage, and emancipation" authentic?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The well-known Hadith in which seriousness and jest are treated equally is: "There are three matters whose seriousness is serious and whose jest is serious: marriage, divorce, and revocation [of divorce]." This is a good Hadith, authenticated by Al-Albani, Al-Tirmidhi, and others. The divorce of one who is jesting is effective by the consensus of the scholars, and intention is not required if it is expressed in clear wording. However, if it is expressed in writing, it falls under allusive expressions (kinayah), and it does not take effect unless it is intended.
