What is the ruling on spending the night, eating, and drinking with friends who are innovators (Mubtadi'ah), as well as with those who abandon prayer, and does the ruling differ based on the degree of their innovation?
The Islamic law warns against associating with bad companions, exemplified by the Hadith of Abu Musa, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of the perfume seller and the blacksmith. The perfume seller either gives you some perfume, or you buy some from him, or you smell a good scent from him. And the blacksmith either burns your clothes, or you smell a bad scent from him." Therefore, associating with innovators and the wicked is evil and a calamity, leading to darkness of the heart and the occurrence of tribna. The matter worsens with cohabitation, eating together, and drinking together. Hence, one must be extremely cautious about this and be keen on the company of the righteous, for Allah Almighty says: "Close friends on that Day will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous." Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Abu Sa'id that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Do not accompany anyone but a believer, and let no one eat your food except a pious person." They must be avoided in the future.
