Is it permissible to give zakat and sadaqa to a maternal uncle who is able to work but is lazy and loves to beg, and is not satisfied with little? And is it permissible to rebuke and expel him because he is too arrogant to accept charity?

It is important to note two matters: Firstly, if the maternal uncle is able to work but is lazy, he is not entitled to Zakat. However, it is permissible to give Zakat to his needy children. Secondly, he should be advised to refrain from begging, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "A man will keep on begging from people until he comes on the Day of Resurrection and there will be no piece of flesh on his face." And his saying: "Whoever begs from people to increase his wealth, is only asking for live coals; so let him ask for a little or a lot." He should also be advised to abandon arrogance, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There are three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them." Abu Mu'awiyah said: "Nor will He look at them, and they will have a painful torment: an old man who commits adultery, a lying king, and an arrogant poor person." And you yourselves are advised to treat him gently and maintain ties with him through your charities or gifts, but not from Zakat.
