The expiatory sacrifice (fidyah (definition)) is only obligatory when its cause exists, such as abandoning an obligatory act or committing a prohibited one. Offering it before the cause is a voluntary act that does not fulfill the obligation. If the prohibitions of Hajj or Umrah (definition) are repeated from different categories, then according to the Hanbalis, an expiatory sacrifice is due for each category. However, the Malikis hold that a single expiatory sacrifice is due if multiple prohibitions occur at the same time or in close succession. The blood sacrifice (dam) required for the expiation is a sheep to be slaughtered in the Haram (definition) and distributed among its poor, and it may be slaughtered at any time.
