Am I sinful for not spending enough on my parents and extended family, and am I obliged to spend on all of them?
There is no disagreement among jurists regarding the obligation of providing for indigent parents. As for other relatives, the preponderant opinion is that their maintenance is obligatory upon those who inherit from them. For the obligation of maintenance to apply, it is stipulated that the provider must be capable of affording it after covering their own expenses, and those of their spouse and children. It is also stipulated that the recipient of maintenance must be poor and unable to earn a living. If there is an inability to provide for everyone, priority is given to oneself, then to the wife and children, then to the parents, then to siblings, and so on, giving priority to the closest relatives.
