The hand of the thief is not to be amputated unless the stolen amount reaches a quarter of a Dinar or more, based on the of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, which states that a quarter of a Dinar is the minimum amount that necessitates amputation. As for the Hadith narrated by Ibn Umar about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, amputating a hand for a shield worth three Dirhams, it is interpreted to mean that these Dirhams were equivalent to a quarter of a Dinar at that time.
Therefore, the basis is a quarter of a Dinar, not Dirhams, because Dirhams are a commodity with fluctuating value. The stolen item is to be valued on the day of the theft. If its value reaches a quarter of a Dinar, the thief's hand is amputated; otherwise, it is not.
