The question

Is zakat obligatory on the estate of a woman who used to receive zakat funds, charities, and social security payments, and who died leaving a large sum of money? What is the ruling on taking money in excess of one's needs? And what should be done to absolve her?

The answer

The heirs must pay zakat on the money for past years since it reached the nisab. If they do not know the number of years, they should strive to determine it. It is better and more absolving for the deceased to pay zakat for the years they believe the money reached the nisab, if all of them are willing to donate. Obligatory zakat is not permissible for the wealthy. If the questioner took from zakat while not being entitled to it, then this money must be given directly to the deserving poor, and it does not enter her inheritance because it is unlawful money.
