What is the position of an Imam who prolongs the recitation of the Quran in the Tarawih prayer, given that some of the worshippers complain about the lengthy recitation, and he is affected by what he observes of their conditions after the prayer, and considering the availability of other mosques in the village?

It is desirable for the Imam to complete the recitation of the entire Qur’an in Tarawih prayers so that people may hear the whole Qur’an. However, if this becomes difficult for the congregants and causes them to turn away, then the Imam should consider their condition and pray for a duration that does not cause them hardship.

If they do not accept advice regarding the virtue of prolonged prayer, then the Imam should lead them in prayer for a duration that does not cause them hardship. He may then prolong his own prayer afterwards, or pray in congregation with those who desire prolonged prayer.

The Imam should gently and kindly advise the congregants regarding any transgressions he observes, and clarify to them the ethics and manners that should be adopted.
