Did Imam Al-Shafi'i live through the sedition of the creation of the Quran, and what was his stance on it?

Al-Shafi'i died before the Fitna of the Creation of the Qur'an, which occurred in 218 AH, while Al-Shafi'i died in 204 AH. Al-Shafi'i's position was that believing the Qur'an was created constituted disbelief (kufr). It was narrated from him that he said: "Whoever says the Qur'an is created is a disbeliever."
