What is the expiation for the sin of a man who verbally abused his wife with obscene language after he found her speaking with a man with whom she had an illicit relationship, which led to the matter becoming public and her divorce?

If a man falsely and slanderously accuses his wife of a disgraceful act, he is sinful. The sin increases if he accuses her of adultery, explicitly or implicitly, for slander (Qadhf) is among the major sins. This crime becomes even more heinous when committed against one's wife. The expiation for this sin is sincere repentance, and part of its completeness is to seek forgiveness from the wife for this injustice. The husband must recant his accusation. As for anger, it does not remove accountability unless the person is not aware of what he is saying. A Muslim's protective jealousy over his honor is praiseworthy, but one must be careful not to let his anger lead to undesirable outcomes.
