The permissible beating, in the case of a wife's defiance, is a non-violent beating, after exhausting admonition and boycotting her in bed. A violent beating is never permissible, and if it occurs, she has the right to divorce him and seek retribution. It is the woman's right to seek divorce due to the harm inflicted upon her if her husband beats her violently, or insults her and her family, or to refer the matter to the ruler to discipline and reprimand him.
