What is permissible in the legal viewing before engagement, and is it permissible to speak with the suitor, and what are the forbidden acts that must be avoided?

It is permissible for the suitor to look at the woman he intends to marry, and it is permissible for him to speak with her, provided certain Sharia (definition)-compliant conditions are met: such as not being in seclusion, and that the conversation is for a need and within the bounds of Islamic etiquette without arousing desire. Anything beyond that, such as prolonged conversation, going out alone together, or physical touching, is not permissible because she remains a stranger to him until the legitimate marriage contract is concluded. Whoever does so has committed a major sin.
