It is obligatory to safeguard and fulfill trusts, and it is forbidden to squander or betray them, as this is considered a sign of hypocrisy and one of the major sins. Repentance from betraying a trust is obligatory. If the trust relates to the rights of Allah, then in addition to repentance, compensation for the squandering is required. However, if it relates to the rights of people, then the right must be fulfilled or forgiveness and pardon sought.
