How many Rak'ahs are prayed before and after traveling a distance of 100 miles or more, and is it two Rak'ahs?
The Prophetic did not specify a distance for travel. The correct view is that this matter refers to the custom of each locality. What people commonly recognize as travel is the travel during which one may break the fast and shorten prayers. A traveler is not permitted to avail themselves of the concessions of travel until they have departed from and passed beyond their locality. They are not allowed to shorten prayers until they have passed beyond the buildings of their town or the inhabited area of their village. As for breaking the fast, the majority of scholars do not permit it except when shortening prayers is permissible, i.e., after passing beyond the buildings. A traveler may combine two prayers before traveling if performing the second prayer during their journey would be difficult for them, but shortening prayers is not permitted then.
