The answer

Whoever is permitted to break their fast in due to a chronic illness that is not expected to be cured must feed one poor person for each day. The amount of food to be given is one mudd of food (approximately 750 grams of rice) according to the Shafi'is and Malikis, and half a saa' (approximately 1.5 kilograms) of other than wheat according to the Hanbalis. The patient must ensure that the reason for breaking the fast is legally permissible, and that the doctor does not take the matter of his breaking the fast lightly. He should consult a trustworthy doctor, reliable in his faith and knowledge, if he suspects his doctor is being lax.
