A fasting person in must break their fast if they fear perishing from severe thirst, by analogy with pregnant and breastfeeding women, because preserving life is an obligation. However, if the hardship is ordinary, breaking the fast is not permissible, and one can alleviate it by drinking water. They are obligated to make up the missed days if they are able; otherwise, they must pay an expiation of feeding one poor person for each day, if they are elderly or suffer from an incurable illness.
