There is no harm for the traveler in consuming things that break the fast, including having intercourse with his wife, if he arrives at his family's home in and she is not fasting. However, if she is fasting, it is not permissible to invalidate her fast. If the traveler has intercourse with his fasting wife and she complies, then according to the soundest opinions of the scholars, she only needs to make up the day and there is no expiation () upon her. If he forces her into intercourse, then there is no expiation upon her, by unanimous agreement.
