Whoever has intercourse during the daytime in must offer expiation, which is: freeing a slave. If one cannot find a slave, then fasting for two consecutive months. If one is unable to do that, then feeding sixty poor people. Paying money is not sufficient. As for the wife, if she was consenting, she also owes expiation, according to the majority of scholars, and it is more prudent for her to expiate.
