Is the testimony of women accepted in sighting the crescent of Ramadan?
The jurists differed on the acceptance of a woman's testimony in sighting the crescent of , with two opinions: The first opinion: it is accepted, and it is the doctrine of the Hanafis - if the weather is cloudy - the Hanbalis, and one of the two views of the Shafi'is, analogizing it to narration and information about the and the entry of the time of prayer. The second opinion: it is not accepted, and it is the doctrine of the Malikis, and the more correct view of the Shafi'is, analogizing it to the crescent of Shawwal. The Hanafis differentiated between the state of cloudiness and clear skies, so in cloudy weather, the testimony of two men or a man and two women suffices, and in clear skies, widespread reporting is required. Some scholars said that the testimony of a female is not accepted at all, while others believe that this is a religious matter in which males and females are equal, like narration. As for the crescent of Shawwal, it is not established except by two male witnesses.
