The answer

If a mother breaks her fast in due to a fractured leg and fasting would hinder her recovery, there is no blame upon her. She must make up the days she missed after her recovery. If she is able to make up the days before the next Ramadan but fails to do so, then in addition to making them up, she must pay an expiation for delaying the make-up. However, if she is unable to make up the days between the two Ramadans due to ongoing illness, then there is no expiation upon her, and she should make them up whenever she is able.
