The answer

The expiation for an oath offers a choice between feeding ten poor persons, clothing them, or freeing a slave. If one cannot afford any of these, then he must fast for three days. The principle is that the expiation should be rendered in the manner prescribed by the Shariah, as this is the most cautious approach and the one that best clears one's conscience, and it also avoids the disagreement of scholars, most of whom prohibited paying the monetary value. Breaking an oath does not necessarily imply sin; indeed, it might be better, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah wills, I shall not swear an oath and then see something else as better than it, except that I will expiate my oath and do that which is better."
