Whoever invalidates their fast in by means other than sexual intercourse (such as masturbation, eating, or drinking) is obligated to repent and to make up the number of days they invalidated. This making up can be consecutive or non-consecutive, and this is the view of the majority of scholars. The Malikis, however, hold that the major expiation ( kubra) is also obligatory along with making up the fast. The preponderant view is that of the majority of scholars, but it is advisable to make up the fast immediately and consecutively if the breaking of the fast was without a valid excuse.
