If a man leaves off talking to the girl he loves in order to propose to her, is it guaranteed that she will wait for him? What righteous deeds can he do to make God destine her for him, and are charity and supplications sufficient for that? Is it permissible to agree with her to talk to her at spaced intervals to ensure she is still waiting for him?

The questioner should make repentance to Allah the basis for severing ties with the girl, as it is not permissible in Islamic law to establish a romantic relationship with a non-mahram (definition) woman, in order to avoid corruption. If the girl is righteous, there is no harm in desiring to marry her and supplicating that she be destined for him. Supplication is one of the best means to achieve this, as stated in the verse: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then [answer them], I am indeed near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me." A Muslim can supplicate with whatever is easy for him and offer a righteous deed as a means before his supplication, for it is more likely to be answered. Scholars have emphasized the prohibition of conversing with a young non-mahram woman and forbade it except out of necessity, while observing the Sharia (definition) guidelines that prevent temptation.
