The question

Is it permissible to cite a statement attributed to Omar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him: "No harm in them having its meat, and for us its profit," to justify financing non-Muslims—residing in Muslim lands—to purchase pork or alcoholic beverages? And is this statement authentic, or was it made under specific circumstances?

The answer

It is not permissible for a Muslim to enter into a partnership for the sale of pork and alcohol, due to the assistance in sin involved therein, and because the profit derived from it is taken from the sale of something forbidden by Islamic law. Allah Almighty said: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression" [Al-Ma'idah: 2]. And it is authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "And indeed, when Allah Almighty forbids the eating of something, He also forbids its price."
