Did I err in publishing a clip by Sheikh Al-Huwaini about sacrificing oneself, wealth, and children for the mother, which angered my wife? And is the mother to be sacrificed for in this way? What is the meaning of sacrifice? How should I deal with my wife's threat to remove her head covering? And what is the ruling on maintenance if the maintenance of the wife conflicts with that of the mother who has no one to support her but him?

"Redemption" (Al-Fida') means to put something in place of another for its protection. The supplication "May I be made your ransom" (Ju'iltu Fida'ak) expresses the speaker's readiness to bear harm on behalf of the addressed person, either with their self or their wealth. This phrase is not intended for actual redemption but rather to express love and high esteem. The Prophet, peace be upon him, used it for some of his Companions.

The wife has no right to be angry at this expression; rather, she should rejoice and help her husband in showing kindness to his mother. The husband can also address his wife with the same phrase due to her high status.

Threatening the wife with removing the khimar is a serious matter and goes against Allah Almighty's commands. Wearing the khimar is an act of obedience to Allah, not to the husband alone.

As for maintenance (nafaqah (definition)), if a man is capable of providing it, he starts with the wife, then the mother. If he can only afford to maintain one, the wife takes precedence. Maintenance for the mother is dropped in case of the son's insolvency and transfers to someone else.
