The fidyah (definition) for a prohibited act is to feed six poor persons (half a saa' for each poor person), or to sacrifice a sheep, or to fast for three days. The one who commits the prohibited act has the choice between these options. According to the majority of scholars, paying the monetary value is not sufficient; rather, feeding the poor is explicitly required, and the food must be given to the poor of the Haram (definition). However, according to the Hanafis, paying the monetary value is permissible.
