Is it permissible to perform Umrah on behalf of a person who has been missing for four years, and will both the performer and the beneficiary receive the reward for Umrah in Ramadan, which is equivalent to Hajj?

If a person goes missing and all news of him ceases, his death is ruled after a period determined by the Sharia (definition) judge, depending on the circumstances of each case. If it is impossible to reach a judge, trustworthy scholars of knowledge can take his place out of necessity. The ruling of his death entails the division of his wealth among his heirs, and his wife observes the waiting period (iddat al-wafat) for death, after which she may remarry if she wishes. As for performing Umrah (definition) on his behalf, there is no objection to it even before his death is ruled, as it is not tied to the rights of the missing person or his heirs. Regarding the reward of the proxy performing Hajj or Umrah on behalf of the deceased or incapacitated, he is rewarded for his good deed and the acts of worship he performs, and any additional reward is with Allah.
