Is it permissible for a woman observing ‘iddah to leave her home for medical treatment in a neighboring city? What is the ruling on her leaving for a stroll out of ignorance? Is it permissible for her to visit relatives in the same building? And is it permissible for her to buy new, unadorned clothes during ‘iddah?

A woman whose husband has died must observe a waiting period (iddah (definition)) of four months and ten days. During this time, she should not spend the night outside her home unless absolutely necessary. She is permitted to go out during the day for a need. Therefore, there is no harm in your mother going out for medical treatment or to visit relatives if there is a need for it. Similarly, there is no harm in you all going to the sea if it is not done with the intention of adornment and does not lead to temptation (fitna).

As for new clothes, she is not allowed to wear any that are considered adornment. However, if they are not considered adornment, then there is no harm in wearing them.
