The question

Is it permissible to borrow money by purchasing an item from a friend at a certain price and then selling it, and is it obligatory to return the same price at which the friend bought the item, or the selling price in case of profit or loss, if the purpose of the transaction is borrowing and not buying and selling?

The answer

This issue is one of two scenarios: The first is a Tawarruq sale transaction, in which you purchase a commodity for a deferred price and then sell it for cash to someone other than the original seller, in order to benefit from its price. This is permissible according to the majority of scholars. The second is a combination of a loan and an agency agreement, where you borrow an amount and authorize the lender to purchase a commodity with it. If they sell it, any increase or decrease in price is your responsibility, and you are obligated to repay the borrowed amount.
