Is someone who refuses to wear a face mask in the mosque during the coronavirus pandemic, out of laziness and negligence, thereby exposing themselves and others to danger, considered sinful?

A Muslim is not permitted to harm himself or others. He must adhere to medical instructions to prevent the spread of the pandemic, as religious authorities have issued fatwas (religious edicts) to this effect. This is based on the principle that the ruler's actions are linked to the public interest, and on the necessity of taking precautions and hygiene measures specific to the pandemic.

Al-Azhar International Center has emphasized the impermissibility of violating these guidelines, as doing so exposes oneself and others to harm and destruction, citing the hadith (definition): «It is not befitting for a believer to humiliate himself.» This highlights that Islamic law is keen on preserving life.

Furthermore, the European Council for Fatwa (definition) and Research has issued a fatwa stating the obligation to comply with health instructions issued by official authorities, based on the parable of the ship, which underscores the concept of collective responsibility.

Therefore, it is obligatory to adhere to wearing a mask and other safety instructions, because refraining from doing so out of negligence or laziness is impermissible.
