Is it permissible to intentionally, forgetfully, ignorantly, or out of a belief that the first Aqiqah was insufficient due to a defect in it or its price, repeat the Aqiqah? And what is the ruling on the second Aqiqah if the first one was sufficient and it is not permissible to repeat it?
The regarding the ' is two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "For a boy, two equivalent sheep, and for a girl, one sheep." Anything exceeding the prescribed number with the intention of 'Aqiqah becomes a supererogatory act (nafilah) and not an 'Aqiqah, unless the repetition is due to a defect in the sacrificed animal or its price, in which case it is permissible to repeat it. If the 'Aqiqah is repeated intentionally or out of ignorance, anything exceeding the prescribed amount is considered a voluntary act and supererogatory, as Al-Qarafi explained that "increasing the number of supererogatory acts (mandubat) that are legislatively limited is among the disliked innovations (bid'ah)." Evidence for this is found in the of Mu'adh ibn Jabal regarding his prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then his prayer with his people, where the first was an obligatory prayer (faridah) and the second a supererogatory one. Similarly, the Hadith of Jabir ibn Yazid ibn Al-Aswad states that one who prays in his dwelling and then comes to a mosque where a congregation is praying may pray with them, and it will be a supererogatory prayer for him. Ibn Baz was asked about sacrificing three or four animals for the 'Aqiqah, and he replied that the Sunnah is two for a male and one for a female, and anything beyond that is not an 'Aqiqah but rather for honoring guests.
