Tarawih in Ramadan?

Tarawih prayer is the well-known supererogatory prayer performed in Ramadan after the 'Isha prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, began praying it in congregation in the mosque, then he ceased doing so out of fear that it might become obligatory for his Ummah. This remained the case during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the early part of 'Umar's caliphate, until 'Umar gathered the people behind a single Imam, who was Ubayy ibn Ka'b.

The early Muslims (Salaf) differed regarding the number of its rak'ahs. The most preponderant opinions are that it is eleven or thirteen rak'ahs, based on the hadith of 'A'ishah and Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both. It was named Tarawih because people used to rest a little after every four rak'ahs due to the length of the prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged performing Qiyam (standing in prayer) during Ramadan, saying: "Whoever stands (in prayer) during Ramadan with faith and expecting Allah’s reward, all his past sins will be forgiven."
