How was the time for the 'Isha prayer determined at the beginning of Islam?

Authentic hadiths and the consensus of Muslims have established the timings for the prayers. Among the clearest of these is the Hadith (definition) of Jibreel with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in which he explained the times of the five prayers over two different days, clarifying that the preferred time for Isha begins from the disappearance of twilight and extends to one-third or midnight, and that this determination has been in place since the prayer was mandated.
