The answer

Biting one's nails during prayer is reprehensible (makrooh) because it is a frivolous act (عبث) that diminishes solemnity (khushoo'). It may even invalidate the prayer if it is excessive, and the criterion for what constitutes an excessive act is common understanding and custom.
