Are there justifications for preachers to deviate from the Sunnah of shortening the sermon and prolonging the prayer in this era, and are they held accountable for that?

The Sunnah (definition) of the Prophet indicates that the sermon (khutbah (definition)) should be moderate in length, meaning neither too long nor too short. It has been narrated from Jabir ibn Samurah and Ammar that the length of a man's prayer and the brevity of his sermon are signs of his understanding (fiqh). It is desirable to shorten the sermon. However, the Imam does not incur sin if he lengthens it, as it is permissible to lengthen it when there is a need, as the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, did in the hadith (definition) of Amr ibn Akhtab. Ibn Uthaymeen pointed out that the length or brevity of a sermon is relative, and that the Messenger sometimes recited the entire Surah (definition) Qaf. What many imams do today, prolonging the sermon and shortening the prayer, contradicts the Sunnah and may indicate a lack of understanding (fiqh) on the part of the preacher, for an eloquent speaker conveys information concisely, as was the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
