The Sharia (definition) guides us to choose suitors who are religious and possess good character, as they are most likely to maintain a good relationship and fulfill their duties. The suitor should generally be pleasing in terms of his religion and character, while observing the obligatory duties and avoiding major sins. As for a wicked person who neglects the obligatory duties, there is no good in marrying him. The father's abandonment of prayer is a serious matter, but the girl's engagement should not be rejected due to her father's religion, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Umm Habibah, daughter of Abu Sufyan, and her father was a polytheist.
