What is the incident of the "demonstration" that occurred to Lady Hafsa bint Omar, the wife of the Messenger, may God's prayers and peace be upon him?
This incident is mentioned in Surat At-Tahrim. Al-Qurtubi, in his , related from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stay with Zaynab bint Jahsh and drink honey there. Aisha and Hafsa then conspired that whoever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to, she would say: "I smell maghafir from you." So he said: "Rather, I drank honey with Zaynab bint Jahsh, and I will not do it again." Then the verse was revealed: (Why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you?). It has also been said that the one he prohibited himself from was Mariya al-Qibtiyya. The soundest of these opinions is the first one.
