What is the ruling on a latecomer (masbuq) when the Imam makes a supererogatory prostration (sahu) due to an increase or decrease [in the prayer], according to the Maliki school of thought?
Imam Malik's regarding the prostration of forgetfulness ( al-sahw) is that if the forgetfulness is due to a deficiency, it should be performed before the tasleem (salutation), and if it is due to an addition, it should be performed after the tasleem. If the Imam performs the prostration before the tasleem, the latecomer (masbuq) should follow him. However, if the Imam performs the prostration after the tasleem, the latecomer, according to Malik, does not follow him. Instead, the latecomer makes up what he missed and performs the prostration of forgetfulness after his own tasleem. This is also the view preferred by Ibn Uthaymeen, on the condition that the latecomer was present with the Imam when the forgetfulness occurred.
