The question

What is the ruling on the Fajr prayer if the Imam forgot the second prostration in the second rak'ah and performed the prostration of forgetfulness (sujood al-sahw) after the tasleem, and does the worshipper follow the Imam in the prostration of forgetfulness if he himself did not make a mistake?

The answer

If the Imam becomes certain he missed a prostration after being alerted by the congregants, he must perform it, then recite the , make the , and perform the prostration of forgetfulness ( as-sahw) after the Taslim, or he may perform it before, and there is no blame. If two trustworthy individuals alert him, he is obliged to follow their word unless he is certain of his own correctness. His merely performing the two prostrations of forgetfulness without performing the forgotten prostration is incorrect. His prayer, and the prayer of those who followed him in merely performing the prostrations of forgetfulness, is invalid, and they must repeat the prayer due to the long separation. As for one who intended to separate from the Imam and performed the second prostration, his prayer is valid.
