Among the conditions for the permissibility of wiping over socks is that they must cover the obligatory area, which is the feet up to the ankles. A prayer that does not fulfill its conditions is invalid. If the socks do not cover the obligatory area, then the prayer is invalid. Scholars differ concerning one who omitted a condition out of ignorance; the majority of scholars obligate making up the prayer (qada'), which is the more cautious approach and clears one's conscience. Therefore, one must make up the prayers that were missed without complete purification.
