Washing the face and wiping the head are obligatory in ablution because they are two pillars. If the concern is about the prolonged presence of water on the limb and not about its use, then the person performing ablution must wash the face, wipe the head, and then dry the water immediately. This does not affect the continuity (muwalat) as long as the separation is brief. A slight separation between the ablutionary limbs does not harm, by consensus of the Muslims.
