Is it permissible to own or work in a women's beauty salon?

Women's beauty salons that are free from Sharia (definition) violations are permissible. However, if they include violations such as: plucking eyebrows (namṣ), tattooing, hair extensions, using harmful materials, beautifying women who display themselves immodestly (mutabarrijāt), viewing 'awrah (parts of the body that must be covered), imitating disbelieving women, using artificial nails and eyelashes, applying alluring perfumes when going out, and men beautifying women; then they become forbidden. The Permanent Committee has issued fatwas prohibiting namṣ and hair extensions, stressing the obligation to cover the 'awrah, prohibiting artificial nails and eyelashes due to their alteration of Allah's creation and potential harm, permitting a woman to adorn her face and hair provided there is no imitation of disbelieving women and her face is covered from non-mahram (definition) men, and prohibiting a woman from going out perfumed. If salons are free from these violations, then owning and working in them is permissible; otherwise, it is forbidden.
