The question

Is it permissible to perform istinja’ (cleansing after urinating or defecating) with tissues for wadi (a thick white discharge that sometimes follows urination), madhi (a thin white sticky discharge that flows when one is sexually aroused), and vaginal secretions, by analogy with the ruling on istinja’ after urinating?

The answer

It is sufficient to cleanse oneself with a tissue or the like when madhy (prostatic fluid), wady (thick white discharge), or vaginal discharge is emitted, and the use of water is not necessary. This is the view of the majority of jurists. However, if the emission is pus or blood, only water is sufficient for purification according to the Hanafis and some Shafi’is. In contrast, the Hanbalis and some Shafi’is permit dry ablution (istijmar) for these as well.
