Rubbing (ad-dalk) during ablution is obligatory according to the Maliki school, and it is performed with the palm of the hand, its back, or anything that serves the same purpose. The obligation of rubbing includes all parts of the body washed during ablution, including the fingertips of both feet and hands. Washing the hands at the beginning of ablution with the intention of it being a Sunnah (definition) act does not suffice for washing them again up to the elbows. Since the palms of the hands directly touch the limbs during their washing, this action takes the place of rubbing for the hands and is sufficient. Ablution must be performed meticulously, and nothing from it should be neglected.
