The question

Does the verse: ﴿Your protector is none other than Allah, His Messenger, and the believers—those who establish prayer, pay zakat, and bow down in humility (in worship)﴾ imply that the Messenger (peace be upon him) and the pious are our protectors, guardians, and helpers in this world alongside Allah?

The answer

The word "Wali" in the verse: (Your protector is none other than Allah, His Messenger, and the believers—those who establish prayer and give while bowing [in prayer].) Al-Ma'idah/55, means the beloved, the friend, and the helper. This is indicated by the language and the context of the verses, which prohibit taking Jews and Christians as "awliya" (protectors/allies). Specifying the "wilayah" (guardianship/protection) in the verse to particular individuals without proof is speaking about Allah without knowledge. The verse includes everyone who believes, establishes prayer, and gives zakat. Furthermore, interpreting "Wali" as seeking help in bringing benefit and warding off harm from other than Allah is a polytheistic interpretation, because all benefit and harm are solely in Allah's hand.
