Is the letter "ẓāʾ" pronounced with the tongue extended or not?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
The letter Dhah (ظ) emanates from the tip of the tongue along with the tips of the upper incisors. The tongue is extended slightly when pronouncing it, though less so than when pronouncing Tha (ث) and Dhal (ذ). Dhah (ظ) is one of the "lithawi" letters (ظ, ذ, ث), so named in relation to the gum (the root of the upper incisors). Among the characteristics of Dhah are: Jahr (audibility), Shiddah (strength/occlusion), Itbaq (closure/covering), and Istila (elevation).
