The answer

Expanding in preparing food with the intention of breaking the fast for those who are fasting and giving charity to the needy is a good and rewarded deed, because what is required in is increased spending and generosity, following the example of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and because it involves feeding those who are fasting. However, if food is prepared for boasting or if it is in excess of need such that it is thrown into the garbage, then this is blameworthy extravagance and wastefulness that causes its perpetrator to join the brethren of devils. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade it, saying: "Eat and drink and dress and give charity without extravagance or conceit."
