The answer

The mentioned story in this form has not been verified. However, a disagreement did occur between Uthman and Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with them both, because Uthman tasked Zayd ibn Thabit with compiling the , as Ibn Mas'ud believed himself to be more deserving of this task. Al-Dhahabi mentioned that the reason for not putting Ibn Mas'ud forward was his absence in Kufa, and that Zayd was a scribe of revelation and an imam in orthography, and Abu Bakr had previously appointed him to compile the Qur'an.
